RACE DAY PROGRAMMES

Old race day programmes are a useful tool in the smooth running of the Mike Hayward Collection. They provide vital information about cars, drivers and entrants, as well as offering a fascinating glimpse into the past.

Mike’s collection of programmes includes the International Spring Race Meeting, held at Oulton Park on April 3, 1965.

A quick glance through the pages reveals that the lap record for over five-litre saloon cars was held by Dan Gurney in his huge Ford Galaxie with a speed of 87.80mph, while the outright lap record belonged to Jim Clark in a Lotus 25 at a speed of 100.2 mph.

The main race of the day was for Formula 2 cars where the winner received a cup and £200. On this occasion it was Denny Hulme who took the honours in a Brabham Cosworth.

One of the adverts in the programme is for a V8 4.2 litre Sunbeam Tiger which could be purchased for £1,445 10s 5d and had a top speed above 120 mph. The manufacturer makes the point that the car had “four well-chosen gears”!
